Our day - We had a morning meeting. We greeted each other and then played a game called Four Corners. We wrote poems this morning. We did reading centers during our rounds of Guided Reading. We also finished up our Easter writing and coloring. We went to lunch and when we got back it was snowing. We went outside for recess. When we were outside we got all wet. This afternoon we learned how to tell time to the half hour and played a Trading Up Game with dice and blocks. Some kids worked with the ipods. We went to specials and then we learned how to blog. Hope you enjoy it!

Fancy Dining at King School
Students at King Elementary showed their King Pride and earned 15,000 pride paws. To celebrate this great accomplishment they were treated with some fancy dining. Students were served their meal and then parfaits were delivered to them once they were seated. It was a very special day. Can't wait until we reach 20,000 pride paws!
Our first glimpses into the gym.

Poetry -
Today students made their first attempts at writing poetry. I initially wanted to find out what they knew.
These are the things they knew about poetry:
1. It can have rhyming words
2. It can be real or make believe
3. It can be like a story
4. It can be like a song
5. You express what is around you in words
6. You express your thoughts in words
We talked about choosing words that describe what you might see, what you might feel, think, wonder, or like about your topic. We talked about trying to capture the reader's attention by using words that would paint a picture in the mind of the reader.
Here are our first attempts at poetry.

Writing Rubric - After creating our writing rubric we then set "Writing Goals". Each student thought about what area they were really good at and the area they wanted to get better at. When they said, "We need to keep working on all of them!" I was pretty excited that they knew and understood good writer's are always thinking of how they can make their writing and work better. They finally did choose an area to work on and posted a sticky note with their name on it next to the goal they wanted to work on. It worked awesome. I also wrote the goals down in my "pensieve". (My most important information I want to remember about each student).
Writing Goals - We spent time creating writing goals and a writing rubric. Since using our writing rubric, the student's writing has changed significantly for the better! The rubric has helped them have a better understanding of what "quality" work is. The best part is when the kids use the ipad (use as a document camera) to share their work with others on the smartboard. So exciting!
